The 30,000 - person festival celebrates African and Caribbean music . The Dankie squad will be amongst a bloodline - up of creative person like Beenie Man , Shenseea , and Busy Signal .
It’s energetic, it’s addictive, and it’s loud. The feeling of being in an Amapiano rave is indescribable. Artists and producers like Uncle Waffles, Major League, and Tyla have become household names as Amapiano continues to make its mark on the globe. In London, you can find a growing list of Amapiano parties all over the city, but there’s one party that stands out from the rest: Dankie Sounds.
We sat down to speak to the team members Olanrewaju and Anyiam to discourse the start of Dankie Sounds , City Splash , and what we can expect to see Dankie Sounds in the future . I lumber into Zoom thirstily waiting for the pair . As presently as they link the confluence I ’m meet with warm welcome .
Though Anyiam is Nigerian he differentiate Seasoned that he was expose to South African music through a close Zimbabwean friend . But , it was during the pandemic that his love for Amapiano developed . “ I was learn a band of live performances from Amapiano DJs like Major League and I could see Amapiano getting big , ” he says .
It was during this fourth dimension that Anyiam pop thinking about creating Amapiano parties in London . “ I thought if we do n’t jump on this , someone else is going to take it and it seemed like we were the first mover so we just ran with it , ” he adds
Olanrewaju chime in saying “ Dankie Sonds was originally James ’ estimate , although we were both doing events before Dankie . Everyone in the Dankie squad loves house music but James had the idea of making Amapiano issue . ”
When Anyiam started research likely names for the brand , he stumbled on the word ' Dankie ' which means give thanks you in Afrikaans . “ Pair that with ' sounds ' it ’s like we ’re saying thank you for the music , thank you for the sound , ’ Anyiam says .
Once they found a name and make a team with fellow members Brown and Adeniyi , Dankie Sounds was born . When they eventually contrive their first party they know they had something special on their hand .
During the conversation , we cursorily bond over our beloved of Amapiano and the bombination of being at an Amapiano party . Having been to Dankie sound myself , I can recount you that you may not stand still at a Dankie party . “ The atmosphere in Dankie just makes people want to dance , I ’ve had friends who prefer Hip - Hop or Bashment music become Amapaino heads after lead to Dankie , ” Olanrewaju says .
Dankie Sounds is split up between two issue : Dankie Sounds and Dankie Rooms . Dankie Sounds is their main event but Dankie Rooms puts DJs at the centre . “ We want to create a brand that touched on more than the medicine and sharpen on the disk jockey . Dankie Sounds is more of a production , it ’s a massive show whereas Dankie Rooms is quite exchangeable to Boiler Room where you’re able to just focus on the music , ” Olanrewaju says .
Dankie Sounds is part of a growing lean of Black British parties . There ’s a plethora of events like Recess , DLT , Slowjamswitha , and Shindig , it sense like we ’re have a Black British company renassaince in London .
Anyiam reckon the Black British party scene boomed after the end of lockdown . “ We have so many different type of issue now and after the pandemic , no one want to stay home anymore . ”
Olanrewaju believes these issue are now offering more than just a political party experience . “ Before they were parties now it ’s more of an experience and that was our bearing for Dankie . That ’s what I love about Black acculturation is that we ’re here to give the great unwashed an experience . ”
The Dankie Sounds experience is what they aim to bring to City Splash this class . Last year , the Dankie team come as guests as part of the Recess stage but this class they ’ll be venture out by themselves . “ Last year we had thousands of people come to our stage , it ’s a blessing to see where we ’ve occur from and how much we ’ve grown , ” Olanrewaju says .
“ It just shows the exponent of God , ” Anyiam adds . Anyiam places a lot of grandness on collaborations like Dankie Sounds and City Splash . “ coaction are what the euphony scene need , it shows that Black mass can work together and there ’s enough opportunities for everyone .
Anyiam adds that opportunities like City Splash allow smuggled people to showcase the finish . “ People still do n’t realize the depths of Amapiano and we like to call ourselves the bridge circuit between the UK and South Africa . So if you ’re new to Amapiano it ’s beneficial to come to Dankie Sounds because we feed it in a agency for British multitude to understand . ” Anyiam suppose .
But City Splash is n’t the last hooray of the class . They ’ll be taking over Ibiza again for a weekend in September . When asked what to require there , Anyiam articulate “ heavy venue , well line ups and better vibes . ”
In terms of future programme for Dankie Sounds , Olanrewaju says he wants to see Dankie Sounds all over the world . We desire to get to the point where we ’re all over the old .
